Karos classes and their roles
Karos has five playable classes, and the choice shapes far more than your first half hour. We describe them below as archetypes: you will see the in-game names on the character creation screen, but the role logic survives every version. We deliberately give no damage or health numbers — those depend on server settings and are not worth memorising.
The five archetypes
- Heavily armoured melee protector. Takes the hits and holds a crowd in place. Slow to farm alone, but the one who holds the gate during a siege. The most forgiving start for a new player.
- Dual-dagger rogue. Enormous pressure in a short window, built around spotting an opening. High reward, little margin for error; ideal if you enjoy positioning.
- Archer. Works at range and manages distance. Efficient while hunting, and in skilled hands brutal in PvP because it can keep damaging while retreating.
- Mage. Elemental area damage. The most visible class in a large fight, and the one that most needs protecting because of cast time.
- Support and healing. The invisible backbone of a guild. Slow alone, irreplaceable in a group.
How to choose
Answer three questions. Will you mostly play alone or with a guild? Do you prefer mass PvP or duels? Would you rather deal big damage and accept dying, or stay alive? A solo newcomer is well served by the protector or the archer; somebody planning to run a guild should look at support; a duel hunter should look at the rogue. How sieges and mine wars actually work is explained on What is Karos Online.
Party composition
A good Karos group is not five people maximising damage, it is four or five players covering each other. The pattern that works in practice: a protector in front absorbing the hits, an archer or mage behind producing steady damage, a rogue entering the moment an opening appears, and a support keeping everyone standing. In dungeons the protector gathers monsters; in a siege, a well-timed area spell decides the fight.
Can you change class later?
A character's class is fixed at creation and cannot be converted later. That sounds harsh, but it matters less than it seems: you can create additional characters, so the usual approach is to treat your first character as the experiment and choose the second one deliberately.
Making a class stronger
Class choice is only half the story; the rest is gear and investment. Two players of the same class can diverge completely through enhancement and skill choices. How enhancement tiers are organised on this server is documented on Karos Remastered. Everything you need to start is on How to Play, and you join the closed beta through closed beta sign-up.
